August 10 is National S’mores Day! To celebrate this special occasion I bring you five fun facts about these ooey-gooey-delicious campfire snacks:

  1. The first-known recorded version of a s’moresrecipe can be found in an official Girl Scouts publication from 1927.
  2. These tasty treats were originally called “Some Mores,” it is unknown when the name was shortened to “S’mores,” but recipes for using the longer name are in various Girl Scout publications until at least 1971.
  3. Grand Rapids, Michigan, hails as the city that eats the most s’mores.
  4. The world’s largest s’more was made in 2014 in Pennsylvania. This s’more weighed 267 pounds and was comprised of 140 pounds of marshmallows, 90 pounds of chocolate, and 90 pounds of graham crackers.
  5. Americans buy 90 million pounds of marshmallows every year. During the summer months, 50 percent of them are toasted over the fire.
