FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Can I double or triple this recipe?

Sure thing! This recipe will make 12 shots and you may need more. It’s a simple recipe to scale, just make sure you have a large enough bowl to mix the Jell-O in. And, of course, make sure that you have enough shot cups.

What shot cups should I use?

I like using these little plastic, single use shot cups.

How do you actually eat a Jell-O Shot?

Interestingly enough, this may be one of the most asked questions any time I post a jell-o shot and it always makes me giggle. But if you’ve never had one before then you just don’t know! The answer is super simple. Just squeeze the little cup inwards to get the Jell-O out. If you want to get sophisticated about it, you could eat it with a spoon.

Why didn’t all my shots set properly?

Typically this happens when you didn’t stir the gelatin mix with the boiling water long enough. It takes about 1.5 to 2 minutes to make sure that it fully dissolves. It’s best to use a whisk. If you don’t stir long enough the gelatin can end up like rubber since it isn’t fully dispersed throughout.

Is chilling the ingredients necessary?

I like to use chilled ingredients since it helps everything set faster. You can even place the alcohol in the fridge the night before to really get a nice chill. And, if in a time pinch, you can toss them in the freezer for 15-30 minutes before you make these Jell-O shots.

Can I make these alcohol free?

Definitely! If serving these to an alcohol-free crowd or to kiddos, you can change it up a bit to make it safe for all to enjoy. For the best results, trade coconut rum for chilled coconut water and blue curaçao for chilled water. For a more vibrant blue, add 2-3 drops of food coloring.

How long are jello shots good for?

These Jell-O shots can keep in the fridge for up to a week if covered in their little cups and you don’t garnish them.

What’s the difference between a Blue Hawaii and a Blue Hawaiian?

They are very similar and it all depends on who you ask. But the majority consensus is that a Blue Hawaiian typically has cream of coconut in the recipe while a Blue Hawaii does not. They both have a blue color and most of the recipes out there use rum. Some recipes may include vodka, or have a mix of both vodka and rum.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE)

  • Berry Blue Jell-O – I’ll be honest here, I have no idea what to substitute this with if you can’t find it. Look for any blue-ish color Jell-O you can find or see if you can order it online. I suppose you could maybe try an unflavored clear gelatin and then add some blue food coloring but I haven’t tried that.
  • boiling water – to get Jell-O to activate you need a cold liquid and boiling liquid. The cold liquid in this recipe is going to be from the cold alcohol and pineapple juice. Just ensure you whisk the Jell-O into the boiling liquid very well (at least 1.5-2 minutes).
  • pineapple juice – it may be a more a affordable option to get the cans of pineapple juice rather than the large bottle.
  • coconut rum – Malibu Coconut Rum is the rum most folks are able to easily find and it’s a affordable price too but use your favorite.
  • blue curaçao – I used DeKuyper’s Blue Curaçao.
  • whipped cream, maraschino cherries and pineapple wedges – these are all just garnish ideas and they aren’t absolutely necessary. Just don’t add any garnishes until you are ready to serve and enjoy.
