Den aktuellen Dodge Challenger gibt es bereits seit 2008. Die Historie des Modells geht allerdings bis auf das Jahr 1969 zurück. Schon damals sollte der Challenger Top-Leistung und einen vergleichsweise erschwinglichenPreis in Einklang bringen – ganz im Sinne der amerikanischen Muscle-Cars. Doch die lange Geschichte der PS-Bolliden mit großem Durst endet allmählich. Selbst Dodge, das heute zum Stellantis-Konzern gehört, musste das einsehen. Denn die Zukunft von Challenger und Chargerist elektrisch.
Das letzte Hurra lässt sich der uramerikanische Autohersteller aber nicht entgehen, und bringt im Zuge des sogenannten "Last Call" gleich sieben Fahrzeuge auf den Markt, mit denen man sich von einer Ära des Überflusses verabschieden will. Unter den Modellen befinden sich Autos wie derChallenger Black Ghost oder derCharger Super Bee. Das große Finale hat sich Dodge aber bis zuletzt aufgehoben – wohl auch, weil die Ingenieure ungeplanteProbleme mit dem Motor aus der Welt schaffen mussten.

Nummer sieben heißtChallenger SRT Demon 170. Dabei handelt es sich auf den ersten Blick um ein sehr unauffälliges Fahrzeug ohne Rennstreifen oder sonstigen Firlefanz. Lediglich die breiten Radkästen und der Lufteinlass auf der Haube lassen vermuten, dass das keine Sonntagskutsche ist. Gleiches gilt auch für den Innenraum – denn viel los ist hier nicht. Ein paar Displays, ein paar Knöpfe – fast alles in Schwarz, wenn man sich nicht für farbige Highlights entscheidet.
Die Musik spielt beimChallenger SRT Demon 170 unter der Haube. Dort arbeitet ein 6,2-Liter-V8-Motor mit sage und schreibe 1039 PS, wenn man den Wagen mit E85-Sprit betankt. Der Wagen ist vollständig darauf ausgelegt, die berüchtigte Viertelmeile möglichst schnell hinter sich zu bringen. Endgeschwindigkeit ist nicht so wichtig und mit 243 km/h sehr überschaubar. Der Sprint von 0 auf 100 Kilometer pro Stunde gelingt dem Wagen dafür allerdings in weniger als 2 Sekunden, dietraditionelleRenndistanzvon exakt 402,34 Metern ist nach 8,91 Sekunden bewältigt. Die Beschleunigungskräfte sollen bei 2g liegen, das Drehmoment bei 1281 Newtonmetern. Bei diesen Werten wundert es nicht, dass der Wagen bei seiner Vorstellung in Las Vegas vor lauter Leistung vorne ein wenig abhob, als es losging – ganz wie im Film "The Fast and the Furious".
Selber Schuld, wer verunglückt
Seine volle Leistung darf der Wagen allerdings nur dann abrufen, wenn man ihn mit Überrollbügel und Fallschirm bestellt – das fordert dieNational Hot Rod Association ab einer bestimmten Leistung.
Übrigens: Wer das Auto kaufen will, muss einen Vertrag unterzeichnen, in dem manversichert, sich über die Leistung des Autos im Klaren zu sein und bei Unfällen keine Ansprüche an den Hersteller zu stellen.
DerChallenger SRT Demon 170 soll höchstens 3300 Mal gebaut werden, wobei Dodge es von der Produktionskapazität abhängig machen will, wie viele Autos tatsächlich vom Band laufen. Der Basispreis für das Auto liegt bei 96.666 US-Dollar.
