What Is The Coleslaw Recall?

The coleslaw recall is a precautionary measure taken by Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc., which issued a recall on December 5th, 2019, for a limited number of cases of its Colorful Coleslaw products sold elsewhere. This action was prompted by potential contamination with salmonella, as outlined in an FDA Recall Notice issued Tuesday [1].

Specific products affected by the recall include:

  • 14 oz President’s Choice Colorful Coleslaw, Lot codes B318005 and B318006 (UPC 0-6038322267-3), Use-by date of 2019 DE 04
  • 16 oz Marketside Tri-Color Coleslaw, Lot codes B318005 and B318006 (UPC 6-81131-38748-4), Used by date DEC 04, 2019

The lot code and use-by date dates are located in the upper right corner of the bag, and the UPCs are in the bottom left corner.

Recalled products were distributed to stores in the following U.S. states—Alaska, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington—as well as retail stores in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.

The FDA said that consumers who purchased any of the recalled coleslaw should discard all remaining stocks immediately. To date, no salmonella infections or other adverse reactions have been associated with the products.

If you develop symptoms of food poisoning after eating any of the recalled products, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Understanding Salmonella and Its Impact on Health

Salmonella poses serious health risks, often resulting in hospitalization or even more severe outcomes. It can lead to debilitating conditions like Guillain-Barré Syndrome, particularly impacting individuals with weakened immune systems, young children, and the elderly.

Therefore, it’s crucial to prioritize food safety and handling practices, especially during outbreaks of these infections.

What Preventive Measures Can You Take?

Preventive measures that you can take to safeguard against salmonella and listeria infections start with basic food safety practices, like keeping foods properly refrigerated and practicing good hygiene. Ensuring that meats are cooked to the correct temperature and avoiding cross-contamination by using separate utensils and food prep areas are also essential precautions.

Additionally, being mindful of potential sources of contamination, including animals and their environments, can further reduce the person at risk of exposure to these harmful bacteria. By adopting these preventive measures, you can help protect yourself and your loved ones from the serious consequences of salmonella and listeria infections.
