FAQs - Factory Five Racing (2024)

Here are a few questions we get every day here at Factory Five:

I am 6’5″. Will I fit in the Mk4 Roadster?

This is not always a simple yes or no answer because it depends on you set-up the car and how you’re proportioned. There are indeed 6’5″ Factory Five Roadster drivers, but to elaborate, here are some things to consider:
– Consider a different seat option than the standard Roadster seat so that you can sit lower and further back
– The Wilwood pedal box (which comes with the Complete Kit) is an excellent tool in optimizing pedal position and leg room
– If you’re worried about foot room, consider a small block engine, for example.
– If in doubt, visit us or find a local owner on The Factory Five Forum who will let you sit in their car. Just remember that their car is set up for them and small changes like those suggested above can make a huge difference.

What is the difference between the Mk4 Roadster, 289 USRRC and Challenge Car?

The 289 USRRC is a cosmetic package for the MK4. We changed the body, and all of the external components like exhaust, rollbar, light locations, fuel cap location, etc. however the frame and running gear configuration is the same as the standard MK4. The Challenge Car is a NASA Sanctioning Bodied race car that has been specially designed for Track/Competition use. It contains parts that are specifically required for track use, and is typically not recommended for street use.

Can I order a Factory Five Mk4 Roadster in a Right Hand Drive configuration?

The Mk4 Roadster is available in both a RHD and Left Hand Drive configuration, you just need to contact Factory 5 for more details. There have been several customers who have done the conversion to RHD, and you can click here for some tips and images on making the conversion.

How much does it cost to ship the Mk4?

There’s a couple of options. You can come pick-up the car here at the factory for free (except for any travel costs) or you can hire a shipping company to pick-up and deliver the car to your house for you. We recommend using Stewart Transport if you decide to have a company ship a kit for you. Their phone number is 602-242-1800.

How many hours does it take to assemble a MK4?

Most customers who have an average knowledge of automotive systems/parts, and have an average set of tools will take about 300 Hours to assemble the kit. This number will vary depending on you individual knowledge, tool accessibility, number of people building the kit, and if you wish to modify/customize the kit in any way.

Does Factory 5 build Turn Key Cars or Rolling Chassis?

Factory Five only builds kits that require the customer or a automotive shop to fully construct the kit into a vehicle. If you do not have the resources to build a Factory Five, you can contact us for a list of recommended builders.

How do I choose between a Base and Complete Kit?

A Base kit is designed to use a 1987-2004 Ford V8 Manual Transmission Mustang for use as a donor car in order to acquire the majority of drivetrain parts needed to construct the MK4 kit. The list of donor parts needed can be found here.

A complete kit comes with everything you need to build the car except for the complete running engine, transmission, rear end with brakes, wheels and tires, battery, fuel pump, and paint. The complete kit is our most popular kit, and if the customer supplied parts are all purchased new, than the kit in the end is an all new build!

What Engines/Transmissions/Rear Ends will fit the MK4?

The only Factory Five supported engines are as follows:

  • Ford 289/302/351 Windsor Based Engines
  • Ford 390/427/428 Big Block Engines
  • Ford 4.6 and 5.0 Coyote Engines

Transmission Options are as follows:

  • Tremec T-5
  • Tremec 3650
  • Tremec 3550, TKO-500, TKO-600

Rear End Options are as follows:

  • Ford 8.8” Solid Axle from 1987-2004 Ford Mustang
  • Ford Super 8.8” Independent Rear Suspension from 2015-Current Mustang

All other engine/transmission/rear end combinations are not supported by Factory 5, and would require customer Fabrication/Modification for proper fitment.
