About Flapjacks
Plants in the Kalanchoe genus are native to Madagascar and tropical Africa. They range from rubbery green leaves, to leopard print, and some are even fuzzy! The word Kalanchoe comes from the Cantonese name for these plants, pronounced Ka-lun-koh-ee in English. Their succulent leaves help store water during droughts, so they'll be just fine if you skip a watering or two (it happens!).

Most potting soils come with ample nutrients which plants use to produce new growth.
By the time your plant has depleted the nutrients in its soil itβs likely grown enough to need a larger pot anyway.
To replenish this plant's nutrients, repot your Flapjacks after it doubles in size or once a yearβwhichever comes first.

Should I let her completely dry out? #Kalanchoe @everyone So I go outside to CK on this plant pots one other They are in direct sunlight but my Stella was flooded. I have no idea how this happened because my Mother of Thousands was right next to it and it was fine.Stella was in standing water that smelled like sewage. Ultimately I had to completely drain her and I moved her to the front where she will still get direct sunlight but under the entrance "porch".Should I let her dry out or just move her to another pot? She smells horribly and I lost some "pups" πFeels like someone came in through the back and just filled her all the way up to the rim.

#kalanchoe #Flapjacks Help! Why Sproutacus is losing his lower under leaves and the rest of them are becoming droopy?? He only gets water when his succulent soil is dry, and the pot is ceramic with drainage. He is outdoors with bright 8-10 hours of direct sunlight, and it's 60s-70s during the day with nights in the 50s. He was doing so well π₯ I haven't repotted or changed the soil. #kalanchoe #Flapjacks

Anyone had any issues with circular holes forming in discs? I spotted one recently and it is around 1cm in diameter inside of the disc. Should I be worried about this hole? Should I clip the affected disc? #Kalanchoe

Flapjacks is generally easy to care for, though some plant parents report facing challenges with growing it. Check out the reviews down below to read more about their experiences!
Common Flapjacks Problems β
Flapjacks thrives in dry soil and should be watered sparingly. Use our water calculator to personalize watering recommendations to your environment or download Greg for more advanced recommendations for all of your plants.
Flapjacks Water Frequency β
Flapjacks requires abundant, bright and direct light. Place it less than one foot from a window to ensure it receives enough light to survive πͺ. Select your region to see how the current weather in your area affects the placement in your home π‘.
Flapjacks Light Requirements β
Flapjacks is not safe to consume. If you, a family member, or a pet has ingested any amount of plant material contact Poison Control, US (800) 222-1222, or your veterinarian. If you have children, cats, or dogs in the home, we suggest keeping this plant out of reach.
Flapjacks prefers dry environments. Providing extra humidity or misting your plant allows water to linger on leaves, which can create the perfect environment for harmful types of fungi.
Flapjacks Humidity Needs β
Flapjacks is very sensitive to wet soil, so choose a potting soil that drains very well and doesnβt retain too much moisture. A good soil will have lots of perlite or vermiculite for drainage and some organic matter for nutrition. A few handfuls of perlite added to regular store-bought cactus soil will do the trick!
Best Soil Mix for Flapjacks β
When and How to Successfully Repot Flapjacks β
Flapjacks should be repotted after it doubles in size or once a year, whichever comes first. Fresh potting soil has all the nutrients your plant needs, so as long as itβs refreshed yearly, you shouldnβt need to use fertilizer. Remember, plants get their energy from sunlight, not fertilizer!
Itβs common for Flapjacks to go dormant in the summertime and you may notice their growth slow down. Waterings should be spaced out more during this time.
Flapjacks is native to Madagascar and Tropical Africa.
Yes, you may see your Flapjacks bloom with the right amount of sunlight and water.
Flapjacks grows vertically and new growth will emerge from the top of the plant.
USDA Hardiness Zone
Flapjacks can be grown outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 10a-12b. Find your local hardiness zone here.
Flapjacks Temperature Tolerance β
Flapjacks can be propagated by the leaf method. To propagate:
- Remove a leaf by gently twisting until it pops off.
- To get the leaf to root, you can either:
- Place the leaf in water until roots emerge and are ~2β long and then transplant into well-draining soil, or
- Place the leaf directly into well-draining soil
When troubleshooting a sad-looking houseplant, start by checking for signs of distress in its leaves, such as yellowing, browning, or drooping, which can indicate overwatering or nutrient deficiencies.
Inspect the soil moisture; too dry or too wet soil can cause problems.
Ensure the plant is getting the right amount of light, as too much or too little can stress it.
Finally, consider environmental factors like temperature and humidity, and adjust care routines accordingly to revive your plant.

Overwatering is a likely cause of issues with Flapjacks. These plants are very sensitive to wet soil so if you notice your plant becoming squishy or translucent, overwatering is the likely culprit.
Cut your plant just past where the rot ends and allow it to callus over for a few days before replanting it in fresh, dry soil. Download Greg to make sure your plant never gets overwatered again!
