Homemade Funnel Cake Recipe (1)

I love going to fairs in the summer and sitting down with a piping hot funnel cake buried in powdered sugar. I don’t know if there is anything better! This recipe tastes just as good as any funnel cake I’ve ever had! We had these for breakfast and they were so quick and easy that we will definitely be making them a lot more around this house!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 4 Tablespoons butter ½ stick, melted
  • powered sugar for topping

Instructions

  • Combine milk, egg, vanilla in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, combine flour, salt, baking soda, and sugar and gradually add to wet ingredients.

  • Beat with a mixer until a smooth batter forms. Fold in melted butter.

  • Pour batter into a funnel or squeeze bottle while using your index finger to stop the flow of the batter.

  • Bring the funnel over the hot oil and release your finger to start a stream of batter while moving the funnel in a circular motion to create spiral-like shapes. Fry for 2 to 3 minutes until golden brown and slightly puffed.

  • Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

it doesnt mention how much oil to use. can it be done in a pan with a small amount of oil or is it more like deep frying?

  3. Sherrie says:

Can you give more details on the oil? I am assuming you mean vegetable or canola oil. What temp should it be at for the frying? My middle son loves funnel cake and would be so excited if I made this. TFS

    Hi Sherrie!

I just used enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom of my pan by about 1/2" so it just depends what size of pan you use. I also just heated my oil over medium high heat for about 5 minutes. You can test it by dropping a little batter in and seeing if it turns golden brown within 10 seconds or so. Hope that helps!

Can you make it without the vanilla extract?

  15. Cyd says:

I'm sure it will be fine without the vanilla. The vanilla adds to the flavor of the funnel cake.
