  2. Cook the oatmeal. Microwave for 1 1/2 – 2 1/2 minutes, or until the oatmeal is cooked to your desired tenderness.

Benefits of Oatmeal

There are so many benefits to making oatmeal at home. Oats are super nutritious and rich in antioxidants. Not only are they healthy, they’re also super filling.

I prefer to use old fashioned oats for my oatmeal. They are less processed than quick cooking oats, cook faster than rolled oats, and have the perfect texture. While I tend to buy my fair share of Quaker oats, I’m also a huge fan of Bob’s Redmill Oatmeal which you can find in most grocery stores or on Amazon.

Oatmeal to Liquid Ratio

When making oatmeal in the microwave, getting the right texture and consistency depends largely on the ratio of oats to liquid. This recipe gives the perfect amount for one person. If you want to double it, double both the oats and the liquid you use. It should be a ratio of one part oats to two parts liquid, always double the amount. This ratio ensures that the oats absorb enough liquid to become soft and creamy without being too dry or too soupy.

Since microwaves are different, you may have to adjust the liquid by adding a splash of milk or water and stirring until it reaches your desired consistency. Quick oats may require less liquid than rolled oats.

Oatmeal Topping Ideas

  • Fresh or dried fruits: Bananas, berries, raisins, or apples add natural sweetness.
  • Nuts and seeds: Almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, or flaxseeds for crunch and nutrition. You can also do a dollop of peanut butter or almond butter.
  • Sweeteners: Honey, maple syrup, or brown sugar to sweeten your oatmeal.
  • Spices: Cinnamon, nutmeg, or vanilla extract for extra flavor.

Tips For Making the Perfect Bowl of Oatmeal

Oatmeal is so versatile. You can add any ingredients that you’d like. I love to top my oatmeal with fresh berries, cinnamon, and chia seeds, but you could top it with anything that you’d like. Bananas are delicious, even apples or peaches!

  • Add a pinch of salt. While salt may sound like a weird ingredient to add to oatmeal, it really helps enhance the flavor.
  • Add vanilla extract. I love adding a little bit of vanilla extract to my oatmeal. It adds another layer of flavor that’s so comforting and delicious!
  • Make oatmeal with milk instead of water. While you can use water, I have found that oatmeal tastes creamier and more delicious with milk. You can use any milk that you’d like including cow’s milk, almond milk, or cashew milk.
  • Prevent Overflow: Use a larger bowl (make sure its microwave-safe) than you think you need to prevent spillage.
  • Adjust Texture: For thicker oatmeal, reduce the liquid slightly. For creamier oatmeal, increase the liquid.

How Long to Cook Oatmeal in the Microwave

Cooking oatmeal in the microwave is quick and easy, but the exact time can vary based on the type of oats and the power of your microwave. After 90 seconds, check the consistency. If needed, continue microwaving in 30-second intervals until the oatmeal is done. If the oatmeal is too thick, add a splash of water or milk and microwave for another 15-30 seconds. If it’s too runny, microwave for an additional 30 seconds to 1 minute. Allow the oatmeal to sit for a minute to thicken before serving.

Storing and Reheating Leftover Oatmeal

Store any leftover oatmeal in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat leftovers in the microwave until heated through, adding a splash of milk or water if it appears too dry.
