After flight training, Bush was assigned to Torpedo Squadron (VT-51), based on USS San Jacinto (CVL-30) in spring 1944. San Jacinto was part of a task force that participated in operations in the Marianas in June 1944. Throughout 1944, Bush flew 58 combat missions.
