Grandma’s Old Fashioned Chocolate Pudding Recipe

I remember as a kid my mom always made pudding from scratch, and it wasn’t until I was older before I ever saw a box of store brand in her cupboard. Once I started cooking on my own, I much preferred the old fashioned homemade chocolate pudding made with real cocoa powder to the boxed pudding mix any day.

Keeping my kitchen recipes simple and usingthe most basic ingredients is what I strive for.

This homemade old fashioned chocolate pudding with cocoa powder fits right into my perfect recipe file.

An old-fashion recipemade with basicingredients that any homemaker will have on hand. This is what I love about this recipe the most, I always have everything I need in my pantry.

I’m able to buy raw milk from a local farm and our fresh eggs make this one of my go-to recipes.

Serves 6

Simple old fashion recipe with common ingredients.

Ingredients

  1. 2/3 cup sugar
  2. 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  3. 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  4. 1/8 teaspoon salt
  5. 2 1/2 cups whole milk (2% can be used)
  6. 4 egg yolks
  7. 2 tablespoons butter
  8. 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan whisk together sugar, cocoa, cornstarch and salt.
  2. On low heat whisk in milk one cup at a time until all combined.
  3. Slowly add eggs yolks whisking all together until smooth.
  4. Turn heat up to medium and continue to whisk until the mixture just starts to boil.
  5. Turn back down the heat to low and continue to whisk until pudding thickens. Approx. 2-3 minutes.
  6. Remove pudding from heat and stir in butter and vanilla until butter is melted and blended into pudding.
  7. Pour hot pudding into individual serving dishes. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 2-3 hours.

    Now you can make chocolate pie. It is not the same recipe that I use but who cares as long as you like it.

    if you put a cup of left over coffee in the mix and leave a cup of milk out it will give the cocoa a more chocolaty taste.. I never use eggs in mine. does it change the texture or the taste?. I guess what i’m asking is why use the eggs.

      I have made that pudding that calls for a chocolate bar, but I always go back to the recipe with cocoa since I always have that in my pantry.

    the pudding recipe has sort of evolved. I’ve been making it for at least 30 years and changed as my mood did. you start out with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch for each cup of liquid. canned milk is richer, but I’ve made it with powdered milk too. you put 2 1/2 c. milk and 1/2 c.coffee(3 cups altogether) in a sauce pan with 1/4 c. of cocoa, and a little sugar say 1/4 cup, more if you like it sweet. we don’t like ours too sweet, you could even use sweetner. then stir in the cornstarch, and a pinch of salt. turn the heat on low to med, stirring to make sure the cornstarch if dissolved.cook till it is thichened, (use more cornstarch if you want pie) take off heat when thickened, add some vanilla, and a pat of butter. stir till butter is melted, pour into serving bowls or in to pie shell let cool. hope you like it. kaye
