Air Fryer Chicken Thighs & Potatoes

Welcome to my air fryer chicken thighs and potatoesrecipe. Originally published in the summer of 2017 and updated with more chicken thighs tips and extra photos.

Air fryer chicken thighs and potatoes gets me every time. It’s the deliciousness of perfectly crispy chicken thighs with perfectly crispy skin on potatoes. The chicken juices drip onto the potatoes and make it taste even better.

I then need to remind myself that these chicken thighs and potatoes became a thing during my first round of the Whole30 back in the summer of 2015.

Gluten free and perfect for a round of the Whole30 or make it paleo by swapping white potatoes for sweet potatoes.

It is wrong that something healthy tastes like something that should never be healthy.

This also brings me back to one of my favourite restaurants and the first restaurant we ever went to after moving to Portugal.

We went here for the first time for Dominic’s 32ndbirthday. He is in his 40’s now so we have been a few times over the years as it is an hour’s drive away.

I have mentioned the place before because the food is based upon simple dishes with amazing garlic flavours.

The most popular is the steak on the stone. Where you pay about 16€ and you can a decent sized piece of fillet steak, you then cook it to your liking on your stone and it is served with garlic cubed potatoes.

There is a salad, but nobody seems to eat it as everyone is too busy enjoying the chicken and potatoes.

The garlic potatoes are so good that you will often ask for more as you can’t help but be greedy! In fact, they were the inspiration behind our air fryer garlic potatoes with bacon.

Or if you don’t fancy steak on the stone, then I often have Mediterranean style chicken kebabs that come with delicious king prawns wrapped in bacon.

This is what I would have had with Kyle when he was 7 and we would then have binged on the delicious potatoes.

The downside of the restaurant is that you often wait a long time for your food to arrive. This means it is really no good for us now as you try asking a 5 year old and a 3 year old to wait for their food.

It is just not going to happen! Hence why we have only been once since Sofia was born.

But in this air fryer chicken thighs recipe I wanted to show you that you don’t have to wait hours for your chicken and potatoes and that you can cook it really quick yourself thanks to the air fryer.

Air Fryer Chicken Thighs Bone In Skin On

In our slow cooker pulled chicken thighs recipe I mentioned that getting boneless and skinless chicken thighs was hard work.

In fact, it was so difficult that we had to cross the border into Spain to get them.

Well that is why I cook air fryer chicken thighs with bone in and skin on so much. It is popular here in Portugal and incredibly cheap.

I will buy chicken thighs in packs from the local supermarket and freeze them until I need them. Then thaw them the night before.

How To Air Fry Chicken Thighs?

To cook air fryer chicken thighs with potatoes is this SIMPLE:

  1. Slice skin on white potatoes into chunks or slices. Load into a bowl and toss in extra virgin olive oil and seasonings.
  2. Load your potatoes into your air fryer basket.
  3. Load your marinade over your chicken thighs and place over the potatoes.
  4. Air fry for 15 minutes, shake the potatoes and turn the chicken thighs.
  5. Cook for a further 10 minutes and then eat.

How Long Does It Take To Cook Chicken Thighs In An Air Fryer?

The air fryer chicken thighs cook time is JUST 25 minutes. Though note this is not just for delicious crispy chicken thighs but also the potatoes too.

I often serve it for lunch with a side salad and the chicken thighs are so hands free I can be making the salad while the chicken and potatoes cook.

Air Fryer Chicken Thighs Skin Up Or Down?

Both! Start off your air fryer chicken thighs with skin down. Then after the chicken is halfway cooked, turn the chicken over so that the skin is up.

Air Fryer Honey Garlic Mustard Chicken Thighs

The air fryer chicken thighs marinade that we use is a honey, garlic, and mustard one. Here in the Milners we live on the Mediterranean and everything is about the combination of sticky honey with garlic and mustard.

It tastes so good and best of all, loading honey, garlic, and mustard onto the skin of chicken thighs keeps your chicken moist and stops it from becoming dry.

Even better, this chicken thighs recipe is easy to vary with your own favourite marinade on your chicken.

You could make air fryer chicken thighs with:

  • BBQ sauce
  • Maple and garlic
  • Lemon Pepper
  • Peri Peri

Or any other favourite dry or wet rub that you like on your chicken.

Air Fryer Chicken Thighs No Breading

You’ll notice that our air fryer chicken thighs has no breading. This is because quite often I just want to load chicken into the air fryer for lunch.

I don’t want to spend ages breading the chicken and I want something that is healthy for a weekday meal.

If you would rather eat breaded chicken, I recommend our air fryer frozen chicken thighs recipe instead.

FAQs

How long does it take to cook thighs in an air fryer? ›

Set the air fryer to a temperature of around 375°F (190°C) and cook the chicken thighs for approximately 20-25 minutes, flipping them halfway through. Cooking times may vary depending on the size of the thighs and the specific model of your air fryer.

What is the best temperature and time to cook chicken thighs? ›

Baking Temperature and Timing

While chicken thighs only need to be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees as read by a meat thermometer, I recommend you bake them until they reach 180 – 190 degrees. This takes 30-40 minutes at 400 degrees.

Why isn t my chicken getting crispy in the air fryer? ›

For crispy wings, take a little extra time to place the wings in the basket one at a time. It is important that the wings don't overlap and aren't too close together. Air fryers work by circulating hot air all around the surface of the food as it cooks, so you need to be conscious of allowing space for that air flow.

How many pieces of chicken can you put in an air fryer? ›

You can cook as many chicken breasts at a time as will fit in the basket of your Air Fryer. They can be touching but not overlapping.

Is 30 minutes long enough to cook chicken thighs? ›

Here are some general guidelines: 1. Bone-In Chicken Thighs: For bone-in chicken thighs, you'll generally need to bake them for 30-40 minutes at the recommended temperature. Make sure the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) to ensure they are fully cooked.

Is it better to bake chicken thighs at 350 or 400? ›

Is it better to bake chicken thighs at 350 or 400? It is recommended to bake chicken thighs at 400ºF. This medium-high heat ensures the juiciest results! Chicken thighs should be roasted in the oven at 400ºF for 40-45 minutes, then broiled for 2 more minutes to get juicy meat and crispy skin!

Do you bake chicken thighs covered or uncovered? ›

Don't Cover the Chicken.

When baking chicken thighs with the skin on, you're trying to achieve crispy chicken thighs in the oven. Therefore, leaving them uncovered ensures a crispy skin that turns perfectly golden.

At what temp are chicken thighs most tender? ›

For the ultimate juicy and tender chicken thigh experience, aim for an internal temp between 175 and 185 F. Any temperature higher than that can dry out or burn your meat, but the perfect 175° to 185° range will get you well above the minimum safe temperature and maximize the poultry's flavor potential.

Can you put raw chicken in an air fryer? ›

Air fry at 390°F for 12 minutes, rotating the chicken once in the middle of the cook time. Again, this is for raw chicken (or raw frozen chicken that has been thawed). The cook time would likely be less for fully cooked store-bought chicken tenders.

What should you season chicken with? ›

Aside from classics like salt, pepper, basil and garlic, you could try using chilli powder, ginger, cumin, cayenne, paprika, oregano, sage, rosemary and thyme.

Can you stack chicken thighs in an air fryer? ›

Stacked chicken thighs and nuggets cooked with similarly disastrous results. Much like chicken breasts, their flat sides fit together snugly, preventing air circulation. If you're intent on stacking, there's a silver lining. The couple of exceptions we discovered were chicken wings and drumettes.

What is the best temperature to cook chicken in an air fryer? ›

After testing a variety of temperatures, I found that 375 degrees F is the best temperature for air frying chicken. Because the air fryer uses convection heat, you do not need to set it as high as you would an oven (in a regular oven, 425 degrees F is best for baking chicken, like Bacon Wrapped Chicken Breast).

How long does it take an air fryer to reach 400 degrees? ›

How Long To Preheat an Air Fryer. Much like with ovens, smaller air fryers will preheat faster than larger ones. So, while a small air fryer may preheat pretty well in two to three minutes, you may want to go for four to give minutes of preheating time in a larger air fryer.

How long do you fry thighs at 350? ›

How long does it take to fry chicken? Starting with an oil temperature of 350°F, each batch should take 20 to 25 minutes to cook, until an instant-read thermometer registers 165°F for thighs or drumsticks and 160°F for breasts.

How long does it take to fully cook chicken thighs? ›

In an oven preheated to 375 degrees F, chicken thighs should be fully cooked after about half an hour. You'll know they're done when an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh, near the bone, reads 165 degrees F.

What is the best temperature to cook thighs? ›

Preheat oven: To 425 F degrees. Prepare chicken: In a bowl or on a cutting board generously season both sides of the chicken thighs with salt and pepper; place into a 9×13 baking dish.
