You might think that tomatoes are a pretty basic ingredient, you just chop them up and throw them in a recipe. But, if you’ve ever watched a TV cooking show you may have noticed that they always seem to remove the seeds from tomatoes when they are cooking. Have you ever wondered why and if it really is necessary for the home cook? Well, it turns out there are some “rules” around tomato seeds so read on to discover when to seed or not seed.

You don’t need to worry about removing the seeds if you’re making a soup or sauce. The seeds will actually add an extra dimension to your dish and if you blend well you won’t have to worry about them getting stuck in your teeth.

It’s a different story if you’re making a salad, salsa, omelette or casserole. Scoop the seeds out from your tomatoes because otherwise they can ruin the consistency and make your dish watery. When adding tomatoes to a salad, it’s best to remove the seeds because the extra moisture can make your lettuce soggy and the seeds can play havoc with your teeth!
