The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift ends with Sean Boswell (Lucas Black) and Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) starting a race and cuts to the end credits before it's revealed who wins. The third installment of the franchise is mostly a standalone sequel, as it follows a completely different set of characters. Teenager Sean Boswell is sent to live with his father in Tokyo following several expulsions, and he gets involved with Japanese drift racing. Though he's new to drifting, he learns from the best, and the final showdown sees him race against Takashi, a.k.a. D.K., the Drift King.

Sean wins the race at the end of Tokyo Drift and becomes the new Drift King, and afterward, others call him D.K., suggesting that the pseudonym is passed on when another person wins a race against the Drift King. In the last scene of the movie, Vin Diesel has a cameo, appearing as Dom Toretto and challenging Sean to a drift race. Dom winning the race could have major consequences, as it would mean he'd be crowned the new Drift King. However, as the movie cuts to black just as Sean and Dom speed off, it's unclear who won the race and if Sean is still the undefeated D.K.

It took a whole nine years until the answer was finally revealed, but a scene in Furious 7 confirmed that Dom won that final race in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Though Tokyo Drift is the third movie in the series, it's , which is why the reveal is featured in Furious 7. In the scene, Sean tells Dom, "Han said you was fast, but not that damn fast." Dom responds, "Who said American muscle can't drift?" This implies that Dom won the race with his 1970 Plymouth Road Runner.

Given that Sean ended up as a rocket scientist living in Germany with Twinkie in F9: The Fast Saga, it's likely that neither of them is the Drift King and that the title belongs to somebody completely unknown.

If there is one thing that the Fast & Furious franchise has proven over the years, it is that anyone and everyone can return to the franchise. After Han died, he mysteriously returned before explaining his miraculous survival as well as why he remained in hiding for all those years. Brian is still part of the story years after actor Paul Walker died. In the post-credits of Fast X, Dwayne Johnson showed back up as Hobbs despite saying he wouldn't appear in another Fast & Furious movie again. Even Gisele somehow survived, and she seemingly died on screen, so anyone could come back. This includes Sean, and it would be easier since he never died.

The fact that Sean showed up in Fast 9 with Twinkie, and was there to help Dom when he needed it, means that the two remain friends — Sean is, as Dom sees it, simply another member of his extensive found family. This was despite who won the race between Dom and Sean. With him as a rocket scientist, he could provide the necessary brains to help Dom and his family fight Dante Reyes and beat a man who seems to have unlimited resources at his disposal. Anyone could return in a Fast & Furious movie, and this includes Sean, whose story might be far from finished after his debut in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
