Yeast extract vs strawberry jam

If you’re watching calories, a yeast extract spread such as Vegemite is the winner. Brands vary, but yeast spread has about half the calories of strawberry jam. It’s an excellent source of B-vitamins, with about a quarter of the RDI of folate per serve, as well as a significant serve of vitamins B2 and B3. One downside is that it has over 1000 times more sodium than jam, but it also has a fraction of the sugar.

It also has on average 2-3 times as much calcium, less sugar and more protein than either kind of chocolate cake. Kiwi fruit vs mandarin

Citrus fruits are well known for their vitamin C content, however the humble kiwi outshines the mandarin, with about 25 per cent more vitamin C. It also has more than twice the fibre and almost twice the potassium, as well as more folate, vitamin E, vitamin K and beta-carotene. But with all that goodness comes 15 per cent more calories. Kiwi fruit wins by a nose, but remember, it’s best to eat both fruits for maximum variety in your day.

Winner: kiwi fruit

Crumpets vs English muffins

The crumpets are your best bet if you’re counting calories. Brands vary, but English muffins typically have between 15-50 per cent more calories, as well as more than twice the sugar and fat. On the upside, they often have more fibre and less salt. Whichever your choice, make sure you get extra fibre with wholegrain varieties – made with wholemeal or added oats – and go easy on the butter, jam and honey.
