With 3.49 lakh cars sold across segments, the month of May saw a 3.6% increase in aggregate passenger car sales compared to last month and a 4.4% year-on-year growth over May 2023. However, despite the steady growth, May was still a stagnant month, with factors such as the lack of festivities and the second phase of the general elections largely affecting sales. The low number of overall dispatches reflected a large inventory of leftover stock and weakening consumer demand. With the launch of the Mahindra 3XO and the start of the Toyota Taisor’s dispatches, May also witnessed a wave of fresh excitement. Nonetheless, by dominating seven out of the ten best-selling spots, Maruti cashed in yet again, with the Swift bringing glory. Here’s what the complete best-selling chart looks like for the month of May 2024.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Nowhere to be seen on the charts last month, the Maruti Suzuki Swift has made a grand comeback, thanks to the launch of the 2024 4th Generation Maruti Suzuki Swift, which now brings in a redesigned front profile along with a new interior layout, additional features, enhanced safety and a new 3-cylinder petrol engine. With over 25 lakh units sold since its launch in 2005, the Maruti Suzuki Swift, now in its glorious 4th generation, rules over a truly unparalleled legacy. The reason behind the hatchback’s massive success is its exhilarating driving dynamics coupled with great efficiency, making the Swift one of the most worthy choices for those who seek exciting performance on a budget. Emerging as the best-selling car of the month, the Swift sold a massive 19,393 units in May 2024, with a strong 12% year-on-year growth.

With this, the Punch retained the title of being the best-selling compact SUV of the month. And now with the Tata Punch EV well in place, the Punch badge as a whole has grown bigger, especially in terms of sales and popularity.

What makes the Tata Punch, a runaway success is its compact bodyline, spacious interiors, impeccable safety and overall affordability. Powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, the Punch offers a five-speed manual or an AMT automatic. Much like several other Tata cars, the Punch also boasts a perfect 5-star safety rating. And this time around, it held on to its charm yet again to finish not only as the third best-selling car of the month but also as the best-selling sedan of the month. With an aggregate sales of 16,061 units in May 2024, the Dzire registered an impressive 42% year-on-year growth, asserting its unmatched dominance. Hyundai Creta

Slipping down a place to finish as the fourth best-selling car of the month, the Hyundai Creta still managed to become the best-selling SUV of the month, with a solid trajectory ahead. Selling 14,662 units with a stable 1% year-on-year growth, the Hyundai Creta dominated the segment like a boss. The biggest reason behind the Creta’s unparalleled growth is the launch of the 2024 Hyundai Creta Facelift, which brings in evolutionary new exteriors, completely redesigned interiors, a host of new features, and Level-2 ADAS onboard.

Talking of the engines, while the pre-facelift Hyundai Creta managed to dominate the market with its 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines, the facelift has finally added a 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit that is offered only with a 7-speed DCT automatic. Mahindra Scorpio

When it comes to true blue SUVs, the Mahindra Scorpio is an absolute legend. Both Scorpios together managed to sell 13,717 units in May 2024, with a high year-on-year growth of 47%, helping the SUV become the second best-selling SUV of the month, in addition to being the eighth best-selling car of the month.

Talking about the powertrain, the Scorpio comes mated to a sole 2.2-litre diesel unit paired to a six-speed manual, while the Scorpio N on the other hand offers a 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit in addition to the 2.2-litre diesel engine, both of which come mated to a six-speed manual or torque converter automatic onboard. Both SUVs together are worthy choices in the segment, with a tough, built-to-last bodyline and true-blue SUV performance.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Slipping down places to close in as the ninth best-selling car of the month, the Baleno did well overall, but not the best. Reporting aggregate sales of 12,842 units, the Baleno despite outperforming several competitors reported a big 31% decline in year-on-year growth. Nonetheless, the secret sauce behind the hatchback’s never-ending popularity can be easily credited to the Baleno’s impressive list of updated features that include goodies such as heads up display, 360-degree camera, premium Arkamys sound set-up and bold new exteriors. This has made the Baleno a hot choice when it comes to bringing home a premium hatchback.

Quickly rising the ladder, the Fronx managed to sell 12,681 units in May, to become the third-best-selling compact SUV of the month in addition to the tenth best-selling car of the month with a good year-on-year growth of 29%. Not just that, the Fronx with its impressive sales, also managed to kick the Nexon out of the best-selling list this time!

Offered with two engine choices; a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology and a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol unit, the former comes mated to a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic, while the latter comes mated to a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. The mileage on offer is superb with the turbo petrol returning up to 21.5 km/l and the naturally aspirated unit returning 22.89 km/l.
