What are the most popular dishes in Europe and the most photographed around the world?
Based on the volume of monthly Google searches by internet users between November 2021 and October 2022, Photobox has investigated to reveal the list of the most popular foods in Europe and the most photographed foods in the world. Proof, if any were needed, that most everyone loves good food and loves sharing it, in all the various cultures across the globe
Italian, Japanese and American foods are the most popular in Europe
To find these results, Photobox analysed the 10 most recognisable and famous dishes in the world based on search hits for terms related to these, to determine which were the most popular and in which European countries (among the 20 most populous countries in the EU). Cccording to Europe’s leading photo printing company, the top ten most popular culinary dishes in Europe are:
- Pizza, from Italy
- Ramen, from Japan
- Burger, from the United States
- Paella, from Spain
- Moussaka, from Greece
- Boeuf Bourguignon, from France
- Pierogi, from Poland
- Tikka Massala, from India
- Eisbein, from Germany
- Tom Kha Gai, from Thailand
Creating memories around food
The study also discusses how food interacts with memory recall. “When we have experiences, we filter them through our senses, including tastes and smells,” explains Rebecca Lockwood, a neurolinguist interviewed by Photobox. “We then link these experiences together in what is called a gestalt. The brain associates things that happen in the future with past events, which elicits the same emotions and feelings. We can create memories around food and cooking by being intentional with the experiences we want to have and thinking about the feelings we want to associate. For example, baking a certain type of biscuit with your children over the course of several different events can create memories that are linked together. We can create these kinds of experiences in many different situations. With friends, family and in relationships. This can create a strong bond between relationships and create memories that can easily be recalled at a later date using the same smells, tastes and feelings.”
