Wontons are one of my ultimate comfort foods. A steaming bowl of broth filled with meaty wontons fits the bill every time I want a satisfying soup for dinner. Folding wontons may look complicated, but they’re actually quite easy. All you have to do is fold the filled wrapper in half to form a triangle, then bring the bottom corners together to finish the fold. You can also use this activity as a fun group gathering if you can recruit some extra hands to make the folding go faster.

There are lots of ways to fold wontons — some requiring pleats and complicated techniques — but I just go for the easiest folding technique possible, and this way is it!

For this simple fold, all you have to do is fold the filled wrapper in half to form a triangle, then bring the bottom corners together to finish the fold. A little water acts as the “glue” to keep the wontons sealed tight so they don’t fall apart as they cook. Remember to buy square wrappers (round wrappers don’t work with this folding technique) and press as much air out of the wontons as you can while sealing them.

Whenever I fold wontons, I like to ask friends and family to help out. We turn it into a party, chatting and folding away, and we can usually make a few batches in just a short amount of time. The delicious reward for all this folding are trays of wontons ready to be cooked or frozen for a quick meal in the future!

Instructions

  1. Get your folding station set up: Lay out your ingredients and equipment on a work surface. You'll need your filling, a small spoon or teaspoon, square wonton wrappers, a small bowl of water, and a parchment-lined baking sheet.

  2. Fill the wonton: Place a wrapper in one hand and place about 1 teaspoon of filling in the center of the wrapper.

  3. Dampen the edges of the wrapper: Dip your finger into the bowl of water and moisten the edges of the wrapper with the water.

  4. Fold the wonton: Fold the wrapper in half into a triangle shape.

  5. Get rid of any air bubbles: Press the edges together to seal it well, pressing out any air bubbles.

  6. Do the final fold: Bring the two bottom corners of the triangle together, and seal them with a little water. You will now have a little hat-shaped dumpling with a top point.

  7. Lay the wonton down: Place the wonton on the parchment-lined baking sheet.

  8. Fill the remaining wrappers: Continue filling and folding the remaining wrappers, placing the folded wontons in a single layer as close together as possible without touching.

If you're not ready to cook the wontons, cover the tray tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

Wontons also freeze incredibly well! Freeze the tray until the wontons are frozen solid, then transfer to an airtight plastic bag or container. Cook the wontons straight from the freezer, adding a few extra minutes of cooking time.
